AC Maintenance Before Summer: When to Schedule and What to Ask

Schedule before peak cooling demand

ENERGY STAR recommends an annual professional HVAC check and arranging cooling maintenance in spring. Booking before the busiest hot-weather period gives you time to discuss a problem and decide on the next step. An annual visit is a planning guideline, not a guarantee that equipment will avoid failure; follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions and any service agreement for your system.

Ask what the visit includes

Discuss the thermostat, electrical connections, startup and shutdown controls, condensate drainage, coils, blower airflow and refrigerant performance as appropriate to the equipment. ENERGY STAR identifies these as maintenance considerations. Refrigerant and electrical work belong with a qualified technician. Request a written account of findings, work completed and any recommendation needing a separate approval.

Prepare a useful symptom record

Note rooms that stay warmer, unexpected cycling, unusual sounds and whether cooling performance changes during the afternoon. Gather the last service invoice and equipment information if available. Describe the symptom when requesting service so Heco can review the need; a system already failing to cool may require a diagnostic visit rather than routine maintenance alone.

Keep homeowner checks simple

Inspect your filter regularly and follow the manufacturer's replacement or cleaning instructions; ENERGY STAR suggests checking it monthly. Check the thermostat setting and keep accessible return and supply grilles unobstructed. Do not open electrical panels, handle refrigerant or enter an unsafe attic to inspect equipment.

Understand the limits of a tune-up

Ask which tasks are included, which findings require repair and what pricing applies before work is approved. Maintenance does not establish a fixed lifespan or make every repair economical. If problems recur, compare diagnosed repair needs with replacement scope using Heco's Repair or Replace Planner. Contact Heco Heating and Air Conditioning to request maintenance for your property and confirm scheduling.

Important: This guide provides general information, not a diagnosis, quote, engineering calculation, rebate guarantee or confirmed appointment. Equipment and property conditions require individual evaluation.
