What is a gas wall furnace?

A gas wall furnace heats a room or nearby living area directly, usually without the ductwork used by a central furnace. You may call it a gas wall heater, wall-mounted gas heater, or wall furnace. Some use natural gas supplied by a utility; others are built for propane, also called LP or liquid propane. The cabinet's appearance alone cannot tell you which fuel or venting system it uses.

These heaters may serve an older home, a smaller residence, an addition or a cabin. A wall unit that heats one area well may still leave distant rooms cold. Before changing the equipment, identify the model, heated space, vent arrangement and the specific comfort problem.

Gas odor or carbon monoxide alarm?

Leave the building and call 911 and your gas utility or propane provider from a safe location. Do not operate switches, use flames or try to restart the heater. Do not wait for an online service request.

Three wall furnace types to recognize

01 · Natural circulation

Top-vent gravity wall furnace

Often a tall, narrow cabinet recessed into a wall. Warm air rises through the grille, and combustion products leave through an approved vent running upward. Combustion-air and venting requirements must be checked for the exact installation.

Some versions can heat without a powered fan. A quiet cabinet does not automatically mean the furnace has failed.

02 · Sealed combustion

Direct-vent wall furnace

A direct-vent design brings combustion air from outdoors and sends exhaust outdoors through its listed vent system. Many compact units mount on an exterior wall.

Vent terminals, wall thickness, clearances and approved vent parts matter. A general-purpose exhaust pipe is not an interchangeable replacement.

03 · Fan-assisted heat

Counterflow wall furnace

A blower moves heated room air through the cabinet. Counterflow describes air movement; it does not identify the fuel or vent type. There are top-vent and direct-vent designs.

A burner problem and a blower problem need different checks. Electrical power requirements depend on the model.

An electric resistance wall heater and a ductless mini-split indoor unit are different equipment. If you are unsure, send the full model number with your request.

Identify the equipment before ordering parts

Williams, Empire & Cozy wall furnaces

These manufacturer families help you recognize the equipment in your home. They are examples for identification, not a promise of inventory, dealer authorization or compatibility with every installation. Heco confirms service support and parts availability after reviewing the exact model.

Williams

Monterey top-vent gravity furnace

A traditional tall wall furnace family offered in 25,000, 35,000 and 50,000 BTU/hr sizes. Installation may be recessed or surface-mounted. The rating plate and manual identify the fuel version and installation requirements.

What to include when requesting service

Brand, full model and serial number if safely visible, natural gas or propane, city/ZIP, and what happens when the thermostat calls for heat. A photo of the closed cabinet and a safely accessible rating label can help. Leave panels and guards secured; do not reach into hot equipment to find a label.

Propane wall furnace repair: what is different?

Confirm the fuel and supply history

A propane wall heater is not simply a natural-gas heater connected to a tank. The appliance must be approved and configured for LP, with the correct fuel components and supply conditions. Tell Heco if your propane supply recently ran out, was refilled, or was shut off.

Homes around Auburn, Grass Valley, Alta Sierra and surrounding foothill communities may use propane. Coverage depends on the property location and equipment; include your ZIP rather than assuming every address is within the service area.

Fuel conversion needs model-specific approval

Conversion is possible only where the manufacturer permits it for that exact appliance and an approved conversion kit is available. A qualified professional must perform and verify the work. Never swap fuel connections, drill an orifice or change a regulator to experiment.

After an empty tank or supply interruption, ask the propane provider about required checks and safe restoration of service. Do not attempt to purge lines or force a pilot to stay on.

Wall heater not working? Start with the symptom.

Describe what you can observe from the normal living area. The same symptom can have several causes; an inspection is needed before choosing a repair.

Nothing happens when I turn up the thermostat

Check the thermostat's normal heat setting and schedule. A gravity heater may have no fan to listen for, while an electronically controlled model may need household power. Report a blank display, error message or known outage. Do not remove wiring, jumper thermostat terminals or repeatedly reset power. Heco can check the applicable thermostat circuit, ignition sequence and safety controls.

The pilot lights, then goes out

A pilot-safety sensor, pilot flame condition, fuel supply or venting concern may be involved. The symptom does not prove that a thermocouple needs replacement. Stop repeated relighting and request diagnosis. Gas smell, soot or scorching warrants stopping use and seeking appropriate professional or emergency help.

The pilot stays on, but the main burner does not start

The thermostat circuit, millivolt system on applicable equipment, gas valve or safety controls may need testing. A visible pilot is not proof that the main burner can operate safely. Keep the cabinet closed and describe whether the burner ever starts or shuts down quickly.

The burner heats, but the fan does not run

First confirm that the heater actually has a powered blower; many gravity models do not. On a fan-assisted model, controls, power or the motor may need evaluation. Do not bypass a fan or limit control. Tell Heco whether there is heat at the cabinet, unusual noise or a burning smell.

The wall furnace heats briefly, then shuts off

Thermostat location, restricted room airflow, overheating or a combustion/venting-related safety condition can interrupt operation. Keep furnishings clear according to the manual. Repeated shutdown needs diagnosis, even if the unit restarts after cooling. Do not reset or bypass a safety device to keep the heater running.

The heater runs, but the room stays cold

Room layout, heat loss, equipment output and air circulation may all contribute. Keep the designed discharge and return paths clear. A room heater may not distribute heat through closed doors to distant spaces. Heco can compare the actual operating condition and heating needs before recommending a larger unit or a different system.

Repair, replace or consider a heat pump?

Repair an identified fault

A targeted repair may make sense when the heater is serviceable, approved replacement parts are available and venting and combustion conditions can be verified. The decision follows diagnosis, not the brand name or age alone.

Plan wall furnace replacement

A replacement needs the correct fuel, heating capacity, cabinet fit, vent system and clearances. Existing venting is not automatically reusable. Heco reviews the installation and applicable permit requirements before defining the scope.

Compare ductless heating & cooling

A mini-split can add cooling and room-level control. Electrical capacity, outdoor placement, drainage and heating load need review. Compare installation and operating costs with a wall furnace; no single option fits every property.

Explore ductless mini-splits

Do not choose a new furnace by cabinet size or a generic BTU-per-square-foot rule alone. Window area, insulation, outdoor conditions, room layout and heat loss affect sizing. Our HVAC sizing calculator is an initial planning tool, not a replacement for equipment selection and a site evaluation.

Vented and vent-free are different.

Online results may show ventless or vent-free gas heaters. California restricts unvented fuel-burning heaters for dwellings. This page focuses on properly vented equipment; do not treat an online product listing as approval for installation in your home. Confirm the appliance listing and local requirements before purchase.

Gas & propane wall furnace questions

Why is my gas wall furnace not working?

A wall furnace may stop heating because the thermostat is not calling for heat, ignition has failed, fuel is unavailable, or a safety control has interrupted operation. Start with the thermostat's normal user settings and any known utility outage. Keep the front grille clear. A pilot flame or a clicking sound does not identify the failed component. If heat does not return, request diagnosis. Do not open the burner compartment, adjust a gas valve, bypass a safety switch or repeatedly try to restart the heater.

Why does my wall furnace pilot light keep going out?

Repeated pilot loss can involve the pilot assembly, a thermocouple or thermopile on applicable models, gas supply, venting or a safety-control problem. Replacing a sensor without checking the cause can leave the underlying fault unresolved. Stop repeated relighting and arrange an inspection. Tell Heco whether the pilot goes out immediately or after the main burner runs. If you smell gas, leave and call emergency services and your gas provider from a safe location.

The pilot is on, but my wall heater will not heat. What does that mean?

The pilot and main burner have different jobs. A visible pilot does not prove that the thermostat circuit, millivolt generator, valve or safety controls can operate the main burner. Check only normal thermostat settings and report whether the burner ever starts. Do not bridge thermostat wires or jump terminals. Heco can evaluate the applicable control circuit and combustion system after identifying the exact model.

Do you work on propane wall furnaces as well as natural gas?

Heco accepts service requests for natural-gas and propane (LP) wall furnaces. Include your city or ZIP, brand, full model number and fuel type so equipment support and coverage can be confirmed. If a propane tank has run empty or supply was interrupted, contact the propane provider about restoring service and required safety checks. Do not attempt to purge a gas line or change the regulator yourself.

Can a natural-gas wall furnace be converted to propane?

Only when the manufacturer specifically permits conversion of that exact model using its approved parts and instructions. Some appliances cannot be converted. Natural gas and propane require different fuel settings and may require different components. A qualified professional must verify the rating plate, approved kit, gas pressure, combustion and venting. Never connect a heater to the other fuel or substitute an orifice based on appearance.

Will a wall furnace work during a power outage?

Some standing-pilot gravity or millivolt wall furnaces can supply heat without household electricity. A powered blower, electronic ignition or other electrical control may still require power. Check the exact model manual; do not assume every gas or propane wall heater works during an outage. Never bypass an electrical or safety control to force operation.

Does my wall furnace need a filter?

It depends on the design. Many gravity wall furnaces do not use the same replaceable filter as a central forced-air furnace. Some fan-assisted models have manufacturer-specified filtration or cleaning requirements. Check the manual before adding filter material over a grille. An improvised filter can restrict airflow and affect safe operation. Ask Heco to identify the proper maintenance requirements for your unit.

Can I replace my wall furnace with a mini-split heat pump?

A ductless mini-split may be an alternative when you want heating and cooling, but the decision needs a site evaluation. Heco reviews room layout, heating load, electrical capacity, outdoor-unit placement, drainage and installation requirements. A like-for-like wall furnace replacement also requires venting, fuel, clearance and applicable permit checks. Compare the complete scope and operating costs rather than equipment price alone.

How much does wall furnace repair cost?

The $49 repair service fee is for first-time customers only. Repair charges are separate and depend on diagnosis, parts, access and equipment condition. Heco explains the findings and proposed repair charges before authorized work proceeds. Include the model and symptoms when requesting service; submitting a request does not confirm an appointment or a final repair price.
