Begin with the property and the existing problem
Write down what you want a replacement to improve: unreliable operation, uneven room temperatures, noise or an aging system. Bring recent service findings to the discussion. A new outdoor unit alone may not resolve a duct or installation problem, so compare the whole project rather than selecting solely by brand or advertised efficiency.
Ask how the equipment is selected
ENERGY STAR's quality-installation guidance emphasizes sizing for the home, correct airflow, refrigerant charge and duct condition. Ask how the contractor evaluates the building and confirms that the proposed indoor and outdoor equipment work together. Oversized equipment can cycle too frequently. A proposal should explain the selection rather than simply repeat the capacity of the old unit.
Make installation work visible in the proposal
Ask what duct inspection or repair, electrical work, drainage, thermostat changes and equipment removal are included. Discuss access constraints and who coordinates permits and any required testing. Ask what checks demonstrate that the installed system operates as intended, and request the documentation provided at completion. ENERGY STAR notes that duct sealing and correct airflow and charge affect performance.
Compare clear written options
List the equipment, included labor, exclusions, payment terms, expected schedule and written warranties for each proposal. If comparing an air conditioner with a heat pump, ask how heating needs and the existing furnace affect the plan. Check utility incentive requirements before relying on a rebate; eligibility and funding require confirmation by the program.
Avoid promises based on age or efficiency alone
There is no single replacement age that decides every project. Condition, recurring repairs and comfort needs deserve a review. An efficiency rating does not guarantee a specific bill reduction for your home. Use Heco's Repair or Replace Planner to organize your questions, then request an installation evaluation from Heco Heating and Air Conditioning for a recommendation and quote based on the property.
